Swim Programme

Our programme is designed so that you can join us at any time from birth through to independent swimming, so it does not matter at what stage or age your children join us. Whether they are confident or timid in the water you will be made to feel welcome.

Babies, toddlers and young children

We have designed the programme to include all the different age groups to correspond with what they are capable of learning to do in the water at their developmental stage in life. Our programme enhances their learning potential on a physical, social and cognitive level. Starting with the Cutie the Clam bonding, floating, swimming together and their first underwater journeys and moving through the stages gathering up all our fun sea family characters up to Smiley the Turtle 3-4 years moving into independent swimming skills.

Independent swimmers are encouraged to join our classes which follow the ASA National Plan for Teaching Swimming, developing the children’s technique and swimming skills. Each level has a certificate that is awarded – there are 7 skill levels.

We have swim certificates which are an indicator of what you and your child are learning to do in class – not all skills need be achieved before receiving one. We have a non competitive philosophy at the dolphin, using the certificates as a gentle guide and a celebration of this joyful and fun journey together.

Cutie the Clam (0-3 months)

Enter into a magical experience, watch with delight as your baby floats serenely in the water. Something to remember forever!

The Dolphin swim school encourages a peaceful, harmonious atmosphere helping you to relax and enjoy a magical time in the water with you and your baby together. We teach you how to handle your baby with a lightness of touch that still feels supportive. The water will carry your baby and we teach you techniques with positive results, allowing your baby to unfold and enjoy the comfort and the massaging effect the water has on the body…

Babies have open hearts and minds and are ready to embrace new experiences. They are eager for communication and interaction. Their bodies are flexible and unfolding. Water provides the stimulation of touch, movement and rhythm and well as the stillness of deep relaxation. The loving handling of babies during our Dolphin baby swimming sessions promotes early bonding and creates a secure and happy foundation of well- being. From the moment you enter the water at our swim school we will be teaching you to ‘water parent’ enabling you the parent to respond to your baby’s body in the water, to follow their natural movements. Your baby will be moving from reflex to voluntary movements. We teach you the relaxed holds and flowing sequences that encourage this transition. Also at this time you will be learning to take off and water swim with your baby with or without aids. Don’t worry if you are a non swimmer we will accommodate and help you feel relaxed and at home in the water with your little one. We will show you how to get your baby used to breath holding in preparation to going under and if they are ready to, give them an underwater swim…Underwater journeys will be taught when you and your baby are ready for it.

They are interested in chasing games and love lively activities accompanied by songs. They are learning to ride aboard your bodies without being held so much by you. The songs and rhymes are the most natural way for babies to listen and learn. All activities are carefully balanced to ensure they have fun and stay relaxed. There is a surge of self confidence with a strong desire to ‘do it myself’ toddlers enjoy an opportunity to show off their skills and will now interact more with their peers, They will be encouraged in their learning by the example of others and will want to repeat activities over and over again! Physically children of this age have grown in strength and agility. There is a need for constant movement and stimulation. Our classes at this stage are exciting and progressive in the skills the children learn by repeating their favourite games as well as learning new ones, skills include: repeated kicking skills, propelling arm movements, breathing exercises. They will be practicing and beginning to master rhythmical breathing, exhaling out under the water as they propel themselves through the water in there motor boats trains or tractors… We use the wonderful imagination of your children by playing challenging fun games, while learning new water safety and stroke development skills.
